Please welcome a very special GUEST DESIGNER this month! Antonia is a digital and hybrid papercrafter for Jessica Sprague. We asked her to join us this month to help show you, our readers, how fun hybrid and digital scrapbooking can be. Following are three projects created by Antonia using Echo Park Paper digital collections.
Sunset at Salt River Fields (Digital)
- Digital "This & That Charming Paper Pack 1" & "This and That Charming Paper Pack 2" (Stary Eye, Wood Stripes, Yellow Rope, Swirls, Stripes, Circles)
- Digital "This & That Charming Element Pack 1" & "This & That Charming Element Pack 2" from jessicasprague.com (Alphabet, Ticket Border, Star, Baseball, Snapshots)
- Digital "Grand Slam Mini Kit" (Paper - Grand Slam Line Up, Element - Baseball)
- Software: Photoshop CS5
- Font: Honey Script, Century Gothic
Instructions:
1. Open a blank 12" x 12" canvas in Photoshop (I used CS5).
2. Use the shape tool to create your basic design.
3. Add digital papers, using your shapes as clipping masks.
4. Add embellishments, banners, etc.
5. Add your photograph(s) and journaling.
6.Add finishing touches (I used the brush tool to add paint splats and recolored them to match the brown in the embellishments. I also added stitching elements.)
7. Add drop shadows throughout the design process and then made final adjustments to the shadows once the page design is completed.

Beautiful Bugsy (Hybrid using Digital & Traditional kits)
- Digital "This & That Graceful Paper Pack 1" & "This & That Graceful Paper Pack 2" (Flower Box, Teal Dots, Brown Grid, Red Floral, Coral Damask)
- Digital "This & That Graceful Element Pack 2" (Chevron Journaler)
- This & That Graceful Collection Kit (Papers: Dots, Flower Box; Alpha Stickers; Embellishment Stickers)
While I love the look of a paper-pieced chevron border, I don’t like the time it takes to cut, align and glue each piece. My time-saving (and sanity-saving) solution was to create my own chevron pattern in Photoshop and use the This & That Graceful digital papers to create the same look, without all the hassle. Here’s the steps I used:
Instructions:
1.In Photoshop, open a 12x12 canvas.
2. Use the shape tool to create a row of rectangles, aligning each new one just below the previous.
3. Select all rectangles, group and use the rotate tool to rotate to your preferred angle.
4. Use the rectangle marquee tool to select the group of rectangles and trim off the uneven ends.
5. Duplicate the grouping, flip horizontally and align with the original grouping to create the beginning of the chevron pattern.
6. Duplicate and repeat until your pattern is finished.
7. Add a light grey or brown stroke around each shape (this will create division between the patterns).
8. Add digital papers, using the shapes as clipping masks.
9. Once the design is complete, cut a piece of 12x12 white cardstock down to 8.5x12 and print.
10. Cut out the design and set aside to use on your layout.
Another digital element I created in Photoshop and printed to add to my layout is the framed photograph, which I used a journaling card to create. Here are the steps I used to create the framed photo:
1. Open the Chevron Journaler card.
2. Use the Magic Wand (tolerance set at 50) to delete the text lines from the card, leaving the top and bottom borders and the flower.
3. Place the photograph on a new layer below the journaling card (because of the placement of the flower on the journaling card, I had to align the photograph slightly off center to the right to avoid placing the flower on Bugsy’s face).
4. Print the framed photograph onto photo paper.
5. Trim off the left edge of the photograph (about ¼" or so), cutting carefully around to the flower.
To assemble the hybrid page:
1. Use the traditional (paper) This & That Graceful Collection Kit to create a matted background.
2. Adhere the digitally created chevrons to the background.
3. Mat the framed photo and add chipboard or pop-dots for dimension and adhere to your layout.
4. Cut the center from a journaling card to create a journaling spot and add journaling.
5. Add alpha stickers, embellishment stickers, buttons, etc.
6. Add baker’s twine, gluing as you go.
7. Add paint splatters.
Wear a Smile (Digital)
- Digital "Note to Self Paper Pack 1" & "Note to Self Paper Pack 2" (Diagonal Stripes, Polkadots, Blue Ledger)
- Digital "Note to Self Element Pack 1" & "Note to Self Element Pack 2" (Number Border 2, Number Border 3, Arrow Border, Brown Flower, Beautiful Smile, Brown Scallop Border, Blue Polka Border, Red Number Border, Women, Today Border, Notes Border, Light Brown Flower)
- Digital "Dots & Stripes Homefront" kit (Ladybug Tiny Dot)
- Digital "Dots & Stripes Candy Shoppe" kit (Ladybug Chocolate Small Dots)
- Digital "A Walk in the Park Elements" (Brown Tag)
- Software: Photoshop CS5
- Font: LD Shelly Script
Instructions:
1. Open a blank 12in x 12in canvas in Photoshop (I used CS5).
2. Use the shape tool to create your basic design.
3. Add digital papers, using your shapes as clipping masks.
4. Add embellishments, banners, etc.
5. Add your photograph(s) and journaling.
6. Add finishing touches.
7. Add drop shadows throughout the design process and then made final adjustments to the shadows once the page design is completed.
