Hi there, Echo Park friends! It’s Wendy Sue, taking over the blog today to share a fun project, featuring Echo Park die cut shapes available through Silhouette. I opted to make a little framed art piece to display in my home, and it only took a few hours from start to finish.
It started out with this paper from the "Country Drive" collection “Bee’s Knees.” I love the honeycomb pattern, but it was a little too bright for what I wanted to do so I gave it a little “white-wash” treatment. (Remember, this project is for a display piece. I probably wouldn’t recommend using spray paint on paper to put in your scrapbook as it may change the archival quality of the paper.)
To “white-wash” the paper, simply spray a light coat of spray paint over the paper – and allow to dry.
Next, I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut the bee (“bee happy”) from my newly painted paper. I sized it to fit on my 12x12 sheet, leaving only a few inches above and below the image.
Finally, I used the “text” option to cut the lettering for my project. The font is called “pottery barn” and it was a free download. I cut the lettering from the red/cream paper ("Times & Seasons" collection):
Here is a quick photo of the die-cuts, ready to be assembled:
The assembly process was easy. Start with a base layer. I chose the heaviest cardstock I could find in my stash – it won’t show at all, it just serves as a base to build everything on. Next, put the white-washed pattern paper directly over the base:
Now, add a patterned paper over the negative space. I used “date to remember” from the "Times & Seasons" collection:
Now it’s time to add the bee. Since there are a lot of intricate cuts, I used a spray adhesive to coat the back of the bee, then carefully placed it over the patterned paper:
After the bee is placed, add the word strips above and below the bee. (I added a strip of black paper behind the cut-out words). Next, place the scallops above and below the word strips:
Next, I used my sewing machine to add a simple straight stitch (with yellow thread) to each of the scallops:
I placed decorative brads between the words (yellow from the "This & That Charming" collection and gray from the "Holly Jolly Christmas" collection). Then I “fluffed” the scallops just to add a little bit of dimension.
I mounted everything within a frame when complete. The next time you’re in need of a decorative piece for you home, check out the Echo Park die-cut shapes through Silhouette and see what you can create!
