Creating Handcut and Outlined Paper Shapes with Susan

Hi everyone, Susan Stringfellow here with a "Splash" of summer fun for you guys. I am going to tell you how I accented my page with big splashy outlined shapes. Of course you can do the same technique with any shape such as a sunshine, clouds, circles, flowers, etc.; but I have chosen water splashes to go with my photo of my boys snorkeling in Shark Reef.

To begin, draw your shapes on scrap paper and cut them out to use as a template. I use the 6x6" paper pad for embellishment shapes like this, or for layered banners because the small scale prints are more charming in the small shapes. After you mount your paper shapes on your background paper, use a large needle or piercing tool to puncture holes about 1/8" from the shape at no more than 1/4" intervals. Next stitch using decorative thread. I have used metallic threads, but you can stitch with thread or embroidery floss as well.

You can cut all kinds of different shapes by hand or with your favorite die cutting system. Outlining the elements with stitching gives them a bit more drama, and helps pop them off the page.

Creating Summer Sticker Cards with Wendy Sue

Have you ever fallen in love with a sheet of fun stickers and bought them on the spot without considering how you might use them? I am guilty of doing this, but I always figure out a way to use my favorite ones as soon as possible.

Create a Scene with Stickers:

I sure loved the tree sticker on the "Perfect Summer" sticker sheet, and I couldn't wait to put it to use somehow. I finally settled on creating a scene with the tree sticker and the clothesline sticker. I used some foam dots to raise up the clothesline sticker for just a bit of subtle dimension. I also added bits and pieces of other stickers and embellishments to complete the scene. 

Let the Sticker Shape Inspire You:

I ended up really liking the previous card design, so I used a second tree sticker to create a similar scene on a circle-shaped card. This time, however, I used the banner sticker to emulate the clothesline sticker in the first card. Arranging stickers on cards (or layouts) to create a scene is a fun way to use up your favorite stickers!
