The Positive Effects of Using a Silhouette Cameo with Echo Park Paper!

Please welcome Ashley Horton to the blog today as she shares a fun "Valentine" project:

 

If you are looking for a great way to add interest and dimension to your layouts, try using a mix of positive and negative shapes. I created a heart background using the "Head Over Heels" collection, along with my Silhouette CAMEO. 

 

I started out by trimming the "Tandem" patterned paper to 11.5" x 11.5" and then placing it on my CAMEO to cut the heart shapes for the background.

After the heart shapes were cut, I placed the "Tandem" paper over the "Hearts" patterned paper, and started to layout my photos and some of the layers on my page.

Once you have your photo and layers arranged, you can adhere these pieces together. Then resize your heart shapes in the Silhouette Studio software, to a smaller size than the shapes you used for cutting your background. When your shapes are finished cutting, remove them from the mat. You can then use a scoreboard or paper trimmer to score down the center of your heart shapes.

Now you can use some adhesive to attach the smaller hearts in the negative heart spaces on your layout background. After the adhesive drys, use a paper piercer to poke holes down the center of the heart and stitch in your choice of embroidery floss. Once your hearts are stitched down, you can pull up the sides of the hearts to create some dimension on your layout.

What is your favorite Echo Park Paper collection?

I absolutely adore the colors and patterns in the Sweet Girl collection!  Having photos of two little girls to pair it with helps to keep me obsessed.

Do you have a craft room or special place where you create?

I used to have everything crammed in a space measuring 4’ x 8’ off the side of my girls’ playroom. They quickly outgrew the ages of needing a playroom, so mama took over! I am very blessed to say that I now have a huge dedicated space for my creative messes. All in all, my creative space takes up about 1/3 of the square footage of our home, but before you go and think that’s quite ridiculous, you should know I live in a very modest-sized home. I’m currently working on condensing and re-organizing the space, so check back with me in a few months when I’ve resurfaced. HA. Maybe I need to cram myself back in that smaller space to force some decisions of what to keep and what to purge!?

Are you a card maker, scrapbooker, altered artist or a combination of these three?

I consider myself a healthy combination of the three!

How would you describe your style? Sophisticated, playful, clean, detailed?

I love to make things beautifully handmade---making something from nothing. My style is very reflective of that, without looking too crafty or homespun. My style can also be considered fresh and comfortable, polished and not forced, and technique driven with a strong focus on layering products and making something from nothing. It often exhibits using products in unexpected ways, and almost always with a touch of stitching--most often hand-stitched details.

Tell us about your family:

I've been married 18 years to my husband Doug and together we fumble through parenting two spunky princesses; one quirky 12-year-old girl and one 9-year-old mini-me. I'm a lover of lowercase typing and coffee flavored ice cream. I wear flip-flops year round even when it's snowing, and the smell of bacon makes me gag. I'm all about pretty stationery, being frugal and the color red. I used to have the nickname 'karate kid' but am sadly out of practice and unable to prove why. Let's just say the only black belt around my waist now is on my jeans. In my dreams I have a perfectly organized house, but reality is, it's organized chaos and makes me only slightly neurotic. Oh, and I loathe shopping and the smell of fruit flavored chewing gum. Baking is my go-to stress relief and cleaning too--as long as there aren't two girls un-pretty-ing (yes, it's a word) everything I just made pretty. And I'm pretty sure I'll lose you all with the fact that I love myself a good peanut butter and dill pickle sandwich. It's delicious, I promise.  So, nice to meet you!

Tell us one scrappy tool that you can't live without:

As one who likes to hand-stitch and add lots of tiny self-adhesive gems and blingy brads, I have to say that I absolutely cannot live without my paper piercing tool.

Share your favorite Echo Park Paper collection to date:

If I have to pick just one, I'd say "A Perfect Summer." But the "Here & Now" collection is definitely another favorite. There's just something about the vibrant colors mixed with chalkboard elements in this collection.

Do you have a craft room or special place where you create?

Yes. When we built our home, it was with the intention that the “formal” dining room would be my craft room. I have a photo tour of my craft room on my blog HERE if you'd like to see some additional photos.

Are you a card maker, scrapbooker, altered artist or a combination of these three?

I like to dabble in all three, but first and foremost I'm a scrapbooker, then a card maker, then an altered artist.

How would you describe your style? Sophisticated, playful, clean, detailed?

I'd say I best fit in the detailed category. I love mixing and matching bits and pieces, and I do a lot of layering on my pages. It's a rare page that doesn't feature some kind of stitching, whether it be by hand or machine. The embellishments you see on my pages were chosen to help tell the story.

Tell us about your family/yourself:

I am a transplant from Massachusetts now living in upstate New York with my husband, Tom and middle school-aged daughter, Alexa. I also can't forget to mention sweet Butterscotch, Alexa's cat, who appears as the subject of some of my pages. I've been paper crafting since 2001 when I was presented with an empty 12x12 album as a baby gift. After staring at it for six months, I decided it was time to figure out what all of the hoopla about scrapbooking was about. It took only one class at a local scrapbooking store and I was hooked! When I'm not scrapbooking or chauffeuring my daughter around, I can be found puttering in my garden, reading a book, cooking up a new recipe or taking photos that will later be committed to paper for all time.

Tell us one scrappy tool that you can't live without.

That would be my trimmer since I can't cut a straight line to save my life.

Throwing a Valentine Party with Aly Dosdall

Hello Echo Park fans, Aly Dosdall here to share some fun Valentine’s Day party ideas with you using the "Head Over Heels" collection. Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. It’s wonderful to celebrate the people that mean the most to you.

We love to have a special Valentine’s Day dinner as a family. We always serve something fun. Last year it was heart-shaped burgers. This year our dinner party will be served on a table set up with these fun place cards.

While we’re eating, we’ll take turns opening some love note fortune cookies and reading expressions of love for each other. The kids especially love to read these!

And for dessert, we’ll sink our teeth into some yummy pink snowball treats dressed up with cupid’s arrow treat picks. It’s the little details that make our Valentine’s Day family celebration extra fun.

My favorite Echo Park collection to date would have to be, "Everyday Eclectic."  I loved the great mix of colors and patterns in this collection!

Do you have a craft room or special place where you create?

I focus mainly on scrapbooking, but I have been making cards also, over the past year.

How would you describe your style? Sophisticated, playful, clean, detailed?

I would say my style is a mix of whimsical and eclectic, but I always like to try new things and looks on my layouts.

Tell us about your family/yourself:

I started scrapbooking about 8 years ago, and have been in love with it ever since. Scrapbooking started out for me as a fun creative outlet and documenting our family photos, but I eventually set goals of being published, being on a Design Team and the big goal, designing for Manufacturers! I have been lucky to achieve the goals that I set, and I have loved meeting so many fellow crafters along the way. I just like to have fun when I am creating and enjoy telling the stories of our family on my layouts. Even though scrapbooking takes up the majority of my free time, I also enjoy cooking, reading, and watching movies.

Tell us one scrappy tool that you can't live without:

 

Definitely my Silhouette CAMEO!  I use it on almost every layout!
