Using Echo Park Designer Dies to Create Unique Tags

Hello Echo Park friends!  It's Wendy Sue here today, sharing a fun way to use our new Designer Dies! I used dies from two different sets to create this collection of tags:

I love that I can get so much versatility out of a single die and a few two-sided sheets of patterned paper, in this case, I used paper from the 6x6 pad from the Capture Life collection.  I cut four photo frames, four hearts, and four "hello" words using these dies:

After all of the pieces were cut out, I started mixing and matching the two different paper designs and began assembling the tags, which were simply 3x4 blocks of paper with the corners snipped off and a punched circle added to the top.  

After adding the die-cut pieces, each tag was embellished with stickers and tied with string.

Now I have a nice stash of tags ready to attach to a gift bag, box, or even the front of a card!

Designer Dies Tips and Tricks with Tania!

Hello, friends!  It’s Tania here with you again today. How many of you are totally smitten with all the options of Designer Dies we now have? I know I am! What I love most is how I love how versatile the dies are. Obviously, they work perfectly for the collection for which they are released, but many of them also pair beautifully with nearly any of the collections. Really gives value to your tools when you can reach for them time and time again and makes it worth the investment. 

I’ve created a pair of cards using the lovely Simple Life collection while mixing and matching a bit of the Simple Life Designer Dies, more specifically, the Simple Flowers Dies, along with the Sweet, Butterfly, Banners Designer Dies released with the We Are Family Collection.

When working with the dies, I realized a few things that make my life easier and thought I’d share those with you.

First of all, having a roll of washi tape on hand is super helpful. If you are trying to die-cut your design from an exact placement on a piece of patterned paper, just a small piece or two of washi tape will help hold you die in place and keeps it from shifting between your cutting plate ‘sandwich’ layers.  Since washi tape is low-tack, you can peel it away without ripping your paper and it leaves no apparent residue behind.

Another thing I’ve found helpful is to die-cut each image from a neutral-colored cardstock to store along with my dies.  Oftentimes, I’m not quite sure if the die-cut is an appropriate size for my space or maybe I simply just don’t know if I want to use it at all, but it may be an option.  If I have a pre-cut ‘template’, for lack of a better word, then I can use that piece to play around with my design until I’m confident that’s what I really want before cutting into my expensive patterned papers and potentially wasting them.

Speaking of patterned paper waste brings me to yet another tip.  Always try to place your dies as close to the edges of your patterned paper as possible so you get as much bang for your buck out of those pretty sheets of paper and eliminate as much waste as possible.

And lastly, I’ll share a time saving tip.  If you know you’ll be reaching for one particular shape over and over while creating, use small leftover pieces of scrap papers and sit down for a longer die-cutting session in which you’ll cut the same shape multiple times to build up a pre-cut supply. This is perfect for things like butterflies, banners, and flowers!  I don’t know about you, but I tend to use those shapes frequently on my projects!

Shaped Card Set by Lisa

Hello Echo Park fans! Lisa here with you today to share two cards made with the new Simple Life collection. This is such a versatile collection, with a homey, nostalgic feel to it. When I first saw it it reminded me of spending time learning how to bake in my maternal grandmother's kitchen. There are plenty of florals, stripes, and polka dots — something for everyone.

When I created this first card, I wanted to make something that would work for either a dinner/BBQ invitation or to send a recipe off to someone. I chose a couple of Echo Park Silhouette cut filesalong those lines, using a notebook sheet (because it reminded me of a recipe card) and an apron and oven mitt to complement the cooking theme.

 

It's easy to add text to a blank notebook sheet die-cut. First, print your journaling on a piece of regular copy paper. Adhere the notebook sheet die-cut over the printed text, using a bit of tape or removable adhesive. Run the paper through the printer again. Underline each line of text to make it look like lined notebook paper.

The apron and oven mitt are Echo Park print and cut files. I changed the color of the original file, to complement the colors in the Simple Life collection, before printing it. Add dimension to die-cuts by using foam adhesive as I did with the oven mitt. It makes it pop a bit. A small twine bow adds a bit of interest to the apron strings.

For the second card, I turned an Echo Park bird cut file into a shaped card (mirror the shape above the original, slightly overlap the two images, then weld them together). 

Machine stitching and layered stickers (some with foam adhesive underneath) add dimension and definition, turning this into a very “tweet” and easy birthday card.
