Hello, friends and Happy Halloween!! It’s Tania here with you today to share a layout I created using the gorgeous Arsenic & Lace Collection. I’m absolutely elated that the Spooky Designer Stamp Set works so beautifully with this collection. I mean, absolute PERFECTION! Sweet serendipity, is what I call it!
I have to admit that I struggled a bit with this page. My style is one that gravitates toward bright & colorful products, and this collection has a lot of black & cream colors in it. But, scrapbooking would be no fun if we always stayed in that safe spot and did the same thing over and over so I was bound and determined to overcome the struggle. As I looked through the whole collection of papers, I fell in love with the Crow & Skull patterned paper. I feel like the sole purpose of this paper being designed was just so I could use it with these photos. Wishful thinking, I know, but look how perfect! My embellishments had to be carefully selected to do double time in helping to bring a little ‘colorful’ life to this page. I can say with confidence that I love how it turned out. The pops of green and orange really help bring life to the page as a whole.
The patterned paper has a good base with the crow, skull and bird cages but I felt it need layers and layers of dimension added to come to a place that felt like a ‘Tania-styled’ layout. So, how’d I go from the blank Crow & Skull paper to the end result?
First, I started adding the first layer of stamping and misting to the background. I simply used a few of the word phrases from the Spooky Designer Stamp Set to stamp ‘spooky’ repetitively in the upper left under the crow & skull accent box and again on the right center of the patterned paper, and also stamped ‘Halloween’ in the lower left corner. The stamping was done by inking the stamp well with a black ink, then stamping multiple times without re-inking to give an ombre or faded out look to the stamped image. In the stamping world this technique is called “stamping off”. Depending on the ink you use, you can get between three and four stamped images when using the ‘stamping off’ technique. You might notice I only have a few dark images of the words, but many, many more of the lighter image. If you want more of the lighter images, reink the stamp and simply stamp the first bold image onto a piece of scrap paper, then continue ‘stamping off’ onto your layout to get the multiple lighter images.
After the ‘stamping off’ of the words was completed, I sprayed the background with black mist and allowed it to dry. Once the mist was dry, I splattered it with watered-down orange acrylic craft paint. Simply water the paint down with a 2:1 paint to water ratio and use a cheap watercolor paintbrush to splatter the color on. Obviously, you need to allow it time to dry before moving on. You can speed it up with the help of a heat gun if you’re an impatient crafter.
Now you’re ready to build up some more stamped images onto your layout. For this particular one, I’ve added a stamped crow in the upper left corner and another one in the bird cage on the far right. You might be wondering why I stamped another crow when there was already one in the birdcage pre-printed on the patterned paper and how in the world did I get a reverse image of that crow stamp. Here’s why & how: the bird already printed on the patterned paper felt too small and much too grey-tone for the overall look I was going for. So, I simply stamped the crow onto a piece of transparency using Staz-On ink. Once dried, I cut out around the crow, flipped it over so I got a mirror image and adhered it over the pre-printed crow using a glue dot. The bold black ink really helped to balance the overall look of the page. This is a great technique to keep in mind for the next time you see an image facing the opposite direction. A piece of transparency and some Staz-On ink will help you remedy that right quick!
I hope these two stamping techniques have inspired you to look at your stamps in a whole new light next time you sit down to craft!
