Create a Lovely Layered Layout Like This One!

Hello, sweet friends!  It’s Tania back with you again today to share a tutorial for putting together a layout featuring The Story of Family Collection. I absolutely adore the deep hues of this collection and all the elements that come together to help document the rich, meaningful family connections. Don’t you just love the wide variety of elements in this collection?  There are so many elements from the chipboard sheet, to the ephemera pack, to the decorative brads…..this stuff practically puts itself together! I love when creating feels effortless, don’t you!?

Let’s get started on this simple, yet layered-up layout:

Our base begins with a sheet of the Navy Solid Cardstock.  In the upper left corner we are going to repeat the phrase ‘Love You’, vertically, three times.  To do so, you’re going to have to sacrifice some of the ‘Q’s in your alphabet by cutting off the extra piece to turn them into an ‘O’. Sneaky, yes?

Then, in the lower right corner, adhere 6 hearts with foam dimensional tape, die-cut from the navy polka-dotted patterned paper pulled from the 6x6 paper pad and die-cut using the heart in the Family is Key Designer Die Set.

Finally, add enamel dots in groups of three: below the ‘Love You’, beside the hearts and a third set in the lower left to form a visual triangle.

 

Next, add the ‘Family is Forever’ journaling card to the immediately right of the ‘Love You’ phrasing with a piece of Decorative Tape across the top. Add the ‘Laugh’ Bingo Card from the Ephemera Pack just below the ‘Love You’ phrasing. Finally, add the photo, matted on white cardstock, just above the row of hearts.

 

Cut, three pieces from the ‘Receipts’ patterned paper as follows: 1. Notes 2. Important Message 3. Family Fun Center. Layer these together in a fanned out manner and adhere to the immediate left of the photo. Then, layer the chipboard typewriter on top.  Next, add the circle with the mason jar of flowers form the ephemera pack in the space between the two journaling cards near the ‘Love You’ phrasing.

Next, add the ‘You Are Amazing’ rectangle from the ephemera pack to the lower center, with the chipboard ‘Arrow’ just above it.  Then, add the ‘mason jar of flowers’ sticker using foam dimensional adhesive to the left of the ‘chipboard typewriter’. Embellish the heart on the Mason jar with a small enamel dot. Add the ‘Crazy about You’ piece from the ephemera pack over the ‘Family is Forever’ journaling card using foam dimensional adhesive.

To embellish the ‘Laugh Bingo Card’ cluster together some leaves die-cut using a die from the Fall Branch Designer Die Set and papers from the 6x6 paper pad. Add the ‘yellow berry twig’ sticker from the Element Stickers sheet with the ‘coral flower’ from the Decorative Brads and the ‘navy flower’ from the Chipboard Sheet.  Then, add the small ‘coral flower’ from the Chipboard Sheet to the Mason jar circle die-cut piece between the Bingo Card and the Journaling card.

 

Embellish the lower corner of the photo with another leave die-cut using the same die, along with a sticker from the Element sticker sheet and a chipboard flower.

And one more peek at some detail and you have a completed layout!

Create This Photo Book Box to Keep Your Favorite Photos!

Hi Echo park Paper Fans!  Holly here from Ribbons & Glue  sharing with you a Photo Book Box made from The Story of Our Family  kit. When I opened The Story of Our Family kit, I instantly thought of a photo book.  Not a Scrapbook, a place to keep favorite photos in and I knew that paper mache book box I had in my stash,  would be perfect for this project. 

To make the Photo Book Box, I  covered the paper mache  box with a various  pieces of The Story of Our Family patterned papers.

I adhered Element Stickers along the front and sides of the box and embellished the box with enamel dots and chipboard accents.

 

On the cover of the Photo Box, I chose a sentiment from the coordinating  Family Dreams Designer Stamp set. 

The  inside of the box is covered with more patterned papers,  Ephemera  cardstock and Element Stickers.

 This Photo Box was so easy to embellish with the Story of Our Family kit and is the perfect size to hold favorite family photos.

How to Create Fun Background Patterns with Our Designer Stencils

Stencils come in many patterns and sizes and Echo Park has the cutest around!  Today I’m sharing two ideas on how to use stencils on cards, along with the “The Story of Family” Collection.

For the first card, I’ve taken a scrap piece of white textured cardstock, the “Branches Stencil”, washi tape and chalks. I started with a yellow chalk and chalked all of the branches.  Then I added a light green and dark green to the base of the branches.

I die-cut two 2.5” circles from the chalked area and matted them with a larger, 3” circle of diagonal striped paper. 

The embellishments were kept simple with just a few stickers and decorative brads added around the edge of the circles.

The second card is made up of the “Leafy Border Stencil” and dark green chalk ink.  For the base, I cut a rectangle from off-white cardstock that’s just a bit larger than the 3X4 journal card.

I taped the stencil down over the cardstock with washi tape.

The portion of the leaf border was inked and then the stencil was adjusted so that the pattern could continue around the top and bottom edges.

The journal card was attached to the center of the leaf frame with foam adhesive.

One of the scroll sentiment stickers was cut in half and added to the top and bottom of the frame.

With stencils you can customize your own unique look to cards or other craft projects!  Try other types of mediums such as modeling or stencil paste, crayons, etc. and have fun!

Design Your Own Decorative Pillow and Tag Set

Hello out there! It’s Courtney Lee here from Court’s Crafts with a house warming gift pillow and tag tutorial!

First up: the pillow. I had a couple of these pillow inserts lying around due to hating the covers that we bought ages ago. I couldn’t bear to throw the inserts away so they have been moving from house to house and finally I found some inspiration in this subway art!

First cut out a large rectangular piece of material that would enclose your pillow. Think about how you wrap a gift to determine your size and add a little for the envelope closure as you will sew the edges down.

Next sew the short ends (not the long end). Press with an iron to get all the wrinkles out. (I know. I know. I hate ironing too. tee hee.)

Cut out all of your words on your Silhouette Cameo using this Family Subway Art cut file from The Story of Our Family collection. I used different iron on colors to match the subway art!

I arranged them all on the same mat so that I didn’t have to keep loading and unloading mats. Here it is all weeded and the words cut up.

Arrange the words and iron onto your pillow making sure that no clear transfer plastic stuff is on top of any of the iron on parts. I recommend just ironing the words on individually.

Here is a better picture with truer colors of the iron on.

I sewed three buttons on for extra love. I really hate button-sewing but actually found this quite therapeutic!

Sew your envelope pillow case shut and either enjoy it or give it away as a house warming gift!

Here is my finished tag:

I used the new Holiday Tags Dies Set to cut some cute pieces for my tag. Then I glued them together.

I decided I wanted to have a big tag base so I cut a piece of the teal/mustard cardstock at 4 3/8” x 2 3/4”. I dovetailed the end and then punched a hole to overlap with the rest of my tag.

Next I used washi tape to hold down the Modern Chevron Stencil so I could use embossing paste.

Un-tape it and set it aside to dry for a couple of hours. Tip: I usually do my embossing paste step at night so I can just let it dry while I am sleeping. Here is what it looks like even with translucent embossing paste right after you finish it. It’s opaque. But don’t worry! It dries a gorgeous clear. Also notice how when I pulled up the washi tape that some of the edge got torn? My fault. Don’t worry! We’ll cover it up! :)

Cut a piece of the red polka dot patterned paper to die cut “home” out of. I used the 6x6 paper pad so the print was small.

I punched a hole in the base and added the telephone brad (how cute is that!?!) and then popped very carefully “home” up onto the tag base. Layer the whole thing onto the embossing paste base.

Wrap brown raffia ribbon around the base of the tag and secure with a bow to hide the mistake. :) Tie a different kind of ribbon through the top and tie a ribbon around it and secure in a bow.

Now wouldn’t this make such an awesome gift for a family who has just gotten into a new home? I’ll admit it… I’m keeping this one for myself. ;) It now graces my sofa.

Add Hidden Photos and Journaling with the Rolodex Card Die

Hi, Aly with you again on the blog to share a scrapbook page I created using the beautiful new The Story Of Our Family collection. We recently took a family trip to Southern Utah to do some hiking and river rafting and I wanted to capture our memories on a single page.

So I decided to use the rolodex card die from the Designer Die Tab Set to create some interactive flaps on my layout for housing some additional photos and journaling.

I created one rolodex card flap for each day of our trip, and included a small photo and some computer generated journaling strips inside. To keep the flaps from being too bulky I added a single sticker on the inside as an accent.

Creating these rolodex card flaps was easy! I simply die cut two rolodex cards from the same paper for each day. Then I scored the top cards at 3/8” from the bottom with my score board.

Then I stapled together the two rolodex cards together at the bottom below the score line. I added a tab at the top of each with some stamped and handwritten journaling, and then embellished the front of the cards with ephemera, paper strips, stickers, brads, and enamel dots.

Creating interactive flaps and mini books on layouts is a great way to add extra photos and journaling. And the Rolodex Card Die is a super cute way to do that. Give it a try on your next layout. Creative cheers!

Try This 3-D Star Technique on Your Next Project!

Hello, sweet friends!  It’s Tania back with you again today to share a fun little technique to make your embellishments POP off your page like I’ve done on this festive page featuring the A Fair To Remember Mini Theme! Summer may be over, but reliving the fun memories through making projects with this collection will surely keep a warm smile on your face. I mean, really, who wouldn’t be happy looking at these colors while creating!? If you haven’t been to an amusement park or the county fair lately, don’t click away too fast thinking there is nothing here for you to see, because the technique I am about to share would look just as darling on a Fourth of July layout or even a Christmas card.  Very versatile, for many different types of projects.

All you need to start is some stars, either die-cut, punched out, or traced from a template.  If you don’t have any of those options, open your word processing program and use the image function to insert a star image, resize it to the size you want and print that to use as a template.  For this layout, I used the Echo Park Star Silhouette Shape (Design ID#40321) to cut out my stars from the various shades of cardstock. 

Once your stars are cut out, regardless of the size of your star, the process is the same.  You will simply use your paper trimmer and score blade (or scoring tool of your preference) to score from the tip of each point on your star to the middle of the star. I have drawn guidelines on the flat star in the image above for reference.  Once your scoring is complete, you will then fold along the score lines and pinch between each point to create the dimension. 

To adhere the stars to your project, simply stack two or three foam squares on top of one another and place them on the back of the star, in the center. This will help to keep them dimensional and from flattening out.

For an added element of fun, twirl and swirl some white twine behind and between your stars, securing in place with tiny staples to keep the loops and swirls to lay flat where you need them to.
