I scream. You scream. We all scream for… summer scrapbooking about the ice cream man and his frequent visits to our house last summer. Errr… I mean… So the poem may not go exactly like that, but I did squeal a little when I saw the new Best Summer Ever collection. I knew I’d be using it to tell the story of our neighborhood’s ice cream fella and his frequent visits.
Last summer, my girls had their first real experience with a stranger in a car, selling sweet treats. It’s not exactly the safest method of food purchase. Nor is it the most affordable. But I couldn’t help but delight in sharing this favorite pastime with my favorite girls. That is, until…
The ice cream man realized we were the sucker’s bet in the frozen food department. He came. My girls rushed out and begged for funds. I’d eventually cave (those Bomb Pops are so hard to resist), and the pattern would repeat. It got so bad that he would actually pull up and park in our driveway. I wish I were kidding.
Finally, I had to call the whole thing off. My bank account (and my belly!) could no longer take the tempting visitor. Time to return to our roots—the much more affordable “Water Pops” (three-year-old speak for Otter Pops).
While I know this story doesn’t put my mothering in the best light, it is one that puts a smile on my face. I want to remember it, and I’m glad I have this layout to help in that department.
A FEW CREATIVE TIPS & TRICKS TO NOTE
* The ice cream truck was paper pieced. I simply cut some sheets from my 6x6 paper pad, added a little doodling, a couple of stickers, some enamel dots, and a blingy brad. This is a nice alternative when you don’t have a die to cut the shape you seek. It’s also fun for making over-sized elements such as this jumbo truck.
* To create a visual triangle around my page, I placed the small banner flag pieces in three unique clusters on my page. I intentionally placed them by photos and journaling to guide the eye from element to element. This design concept is well known and well used for a reason—it’s a great way to keep your viewer’s eye on the heart of your design.
* This is an awesome opportunity to embrace the versatility of stamps. The Say Hello to Summer stamp set comes with an ice cream cone image, but we’re more snow cone peeps. No problem. Simply color the stamp to go with whatever iced treat you fancy. Another creative possibility: Mask so just the cone stamps and use enamel dots to create treats with texture.
That’s it for now. I hear the faint, off-putting rendition of a child’s lullaby blaring from cheap speakers. That can only mean one thing! Bomb Pops are calling, and I must go! ;)
Cheers!
