Hello there again friends; this is Lydia Cost again, and today I’m sharing with you a little peek inside my process and finished details of a caterpillar album. This little cutie is made with the amazing papers and stickers in the It’s Your Birthday Boy collection.
This is only the second time I’ve created one of these caterpillar albums in over ten years. I remember making one for the first time when I was in middle school with lots of little photos of my younger brother. As you can tell I’ve been a papercrafter my entire life.
For this one I chose to document my little’s first birthday, and the primary color scheme lent itself perfectly for the theme. That’s what I love most about the It’s Your Birthday collection; it matches perfectly to any birthday color scheme you might have!
For the outer part of my album, I chose to make my covers out of the amazing Party Animals paper. I love all the fun animal illustrations on this paper, and I just knew it would make the perfect album cover. A little recycling secret to making the perfect album cover for all your albums is dryer sheets! I save up my used dryer sheets and them use a few of them to stuff the inside of my covers for extra dimension and character. It makes even your homemade albums look professional.
There’s a full PDF tutorial here for all the instructions of putting together your own caterpillar album. After I got mine all constructed and stitched together, I got to move on to the fun part of embellishing and adding photos.
A great tip for choosing photos for caterpillar albums is to work with 5x7 photos or larger, with the subjects in the center of the frame. This allows for the photos to be easily trimmed into diamond and triangular shapes. I chose 6 photos to fill my album, but you can always add more. You can even choose to embellish the backside of the album with even more photos and goodies; for this particular album I didn’t, but it’s a great way to fit a lot into a little album.
I think what I love so much about this album is that it expands so much, and it only takes up a little bit of space when it’s all folded back up. Everyone that’s ever peaked inside one of these has always been so enthralled with how the pages are folded and put together into a little 4x4 album.
I really hope you loved taking a peek inside my caterpillar album, and I hope you’re inspire to create your very own. Make sure to check out the full tutorial in the Echo Park Project Downloads section!
