Hello there again amazing crafty friends! It’s Lydia Cost today, and I’m thrilled to be sharing how to create this oh so fun mixed media layout, using the amazing Halloween Market collection. Mixed Media can be so simple to use in all your layouts, to add that extra bit of pop to your projects.
To start this layout, I knew that I wanted to create some great black stripes. These always pop nicely atop a clean solid sheet of cardstock, so I pulled out the solids paper collection. I opted for the orange/cream paper, so that I could base my layout on the amazing greyish cream color. I knew the color would pair perfectly with not only my mixed media, but the element stickers I planned to embellish with.
Next I pulled out my opaque watercolors. After mixing some black with water, I used a large brush to sweep on paint in stripes along the center of my layout. Feel free to make these stripes as slender or thick as you like. I personally like the impact that large stripes have on the background, so I stuck with my large brush.
The next step I took was to pull out the great dies from this collection. I loved this script font of Halloween words, and I knew they would look great placed along the layout near the stripes. I cut them out on some more solid sheets of paper and also the starry night patterned paper. I love the way they really pop in comparison to the black.
After positioning my die-cut words, I pulled out my sheet of element stickers. I knew I would be using a ton of element stickers with this layout, because the illustrations in this collection are so amazing. I think it’s one of my favorite Halloween collections ever. I positioned my stickers along my stripes and nestled them in with my die-cut words.
Next I pulled out ever last bat on the sticker sheet to really help my layout pop. To get even more dimension, fold the wings up along the spine on each side. This creates the illusion that those cute little bats are flying right off your layout. After positioning these in twos and threes around my layout, I then positioned my photo near the center. I chose to keep the layers behind my photo simple, with some tissue paper and some patterned paper.
To finish off the layout I popped up my photo with some foam dots and then splatter on some addition black paint. For the black splatters I use my smaller brush saturated in lots of opaque watercolor. I then hit the middle of the handle of my brush, spraying paint haphazardly around the page. I like to do these splatters in threes, so I arrange the splatters in three different places on my layout.
It’s as simple as that, but this fun mixed media layout really packs a punch. It always turns out clean and pretty, so it’s a template I use frequently!
